Every year on June 29, we celebrate Danube Day, honoring one of Europe’s most vital rivers. This day reminds us of the importance of the Danube for millions of people, for nature, and for sustainable development.
Among the river’s most ancient and endangered inhabitants are sturgeon — unique fish species that urgently need our protection. In this context, the project “Network for the Preservation of Sturgeon and for the Sustainability of the Black Sea Basin Ecosystem – SturNet” BSB00172 plays a key role. Its primary goal is the protection and preservation of sturgeon in the Black Sea basin, through international cooperation, population monitoring, restoration of natural spawning grounds, and raising public environmental awareness. Protecting sturgeon means safeguarding biodiversity, strengthening economic potential and maintaining ecological balance throughout the Black Sea region.
On Danube Day, we invite everyone to reflect on the value of our natural resources and support efforts to restore and protect aquatic ecosystems. The Danube is life. Sturgeons are its legacy. Let’s protect them together!
