On August 3, 2026 the State Organization “Institute of Market and Economic-Ecological Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” and the NGO “Youth Democratic Development Center ‘Synergy'” officially signed a Memorandum of Cooperation.
The alliance aims to drive collaborative environmental action, promote biodiversity preservation, and foster sustainable development across the Black Sea–Danube region by engaging researchers, civil society, and youth leaders. A central priority is the protection of sturgeon species – among the most ancient, ecologically critical, and endangered aquatic species in the Black Sea, Danube, and Dnipro basins.
A major track of this partnership involves active participation in the international project BSB00172 SturNet (funded under the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme). The project advances scientific research, strengthens cross-border ecosystem monitoring, assesses sturgeon population dynamics, and promotes actionable resilience strategies for Black Sea ecosystems.
For Ukraine, this work carries profound importance given the ecological value of the Danube region, the Black Sea coastal zones, and Odesa’s wetland ecosystems.
The core strength of this alliance lies in blending IMEER NASU’s scientific excellence with the community outreach and youth activism of NGO “Synergy.” This dynamic creates opportunities to bridge the gap between science and society – empowering youth to take an active role in ecological stewardship and sustainable community development. Engaging the younger generation is a vital long-term investment: youth-led initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and educational outreach complement academic research and environmental monitoring.

The parties align their efforts with modern national and international environmental governance standards. This Memorandum unlocks new opportunities for joint educational programs, scientific outreach, and conservation actions designed to build an ecologically conscious society and champion sustainable development across the Black Sea–Danube region.
