Every year on July 28, the world celebrates World Nature Conservation Day. The main purpose of this day is to remind society that a healthy ecosystem is the foundation of our sustainable future, and that biodiversity conservation requires daily joint action.
For the Black Sea Basin, this issue is particularly acute: unique species and aquatic ecosystems face significant pressure from anthropogenic and environmental challenges.
From Idea to Action: The SturNet Project’s Contribution
Preserving natural heritage lies at the heart of the SturNet project (“Network for the Preservation of Sturgeon and for the Sustainability of the Black Sea Basin Ecosystem”, BSB00172). Sturgeon species serve as true “indicators” of the health of the Black Sea and Danube River aquatic ecosystems. By protecting sturgeon, we protect the entire natural complex of the region.

How SturNet Puts Nature Conservation Principles into Practice:
- Networking and Collaboration: Creating an international network of scientists, environmentalists, and local communities for effective monitoring and protection of critical sturgeon habitats.
- Digital Solutions for Ecology: Implementing modern mapping and data validation tools that enable prompt tracking of population status and rapid response to threats.
- Awareness and Youth Engagement: Conducting educational seminars and training sessions, as nature conservation begins with environmental awareness and education for the new generation.
- Rescue and Preservation: Supporting practical initiatives to identify, monitor, and protect valuable specimens of the region’s wild fauna.
“Nature conservation is not just about saving individual species; it is about caring for the integrity of the entire ecosystem on which our quality of life depends. SturNet unites efforts to ensure that the Black Sea remains alive and rich for future generations.”
Congratulations to everyone involved on World Nature Conservation Day!
We thank every partner and participant of the initiative for their contribution to our common cause.
Let’s protect nature together!
