On September 27, the global community celebrates World Rivers Day, highlighting the vital importance of freshwater ecosystems for our planet, biodiversity, and human well-being. Rivers act as the natural arteries of the Earth, bridging terrestrial and marine environments. The health of our river systems directly shapes the ecological balance of the Black Sea Basin and the survival of its unique aquatic life. Protecting rare and endangered species—especially sturgeons, whose life cycle relies entirely on unobstructed migration between rivers and the sea—demands urgent, coordinated action today.
As part of the international project “Network for the Preservation of Sturgeon and for the Sustainability of the Black Sea Basin Ecosystem” SturNet (BSB 00172), our team actively works to establish a transnational network dedicated to sturgeon monitoring and conservation across the Black Sea Basin. Preserving rivers is essential for maintaining resilient ecosystems and protecting rich aquatic heritage for generations to come. We invite partners, colleagues, and the public to join us in supporting healthy, free-flowing rivers!
